Remote Seeding Setup with Chrome Remote Desktop

Securely remote into your gaming PC with Chrome Remote Desktop to launch Squad and help keep Command Squad's servers seeded — even when you're away from home.

At work, travelling, or just away from the desk? You can still help. This guide walks through using Chrome Remote Desktop to securely reach your home gaming PC, launch Squad, and join the server to help seed — one of the most valuable things you can do for the community.

Seeding is what turns an empty server into a full one. Being able to load in from anywhere means you can help hold daytime momentum even when you can’t be at your PC.

What this lets you do

Once it’s set up, you can reach your home PC from a phone, tablet, or another computer to:

  • Launch Squad and join a Command Squad server to seed
  • Restart the game or PC if something hangs
  • Check Discord or server status
  • Keep contributing while you’re at work, travelling, or busy around the house

It’s especially handy for CMD members helping maintain daytime seed momentum, but anyone who wants to help is welcome to use it.

Before you start

Make sure you have:

  • A Windows gaming PC left powered on at home
  • Google Chrome installed on that PC
  • A Google account
  • A stable home internet connection
  • Permission to install software on the PC

Keep it secure

Remote access to your own machine is safe when it’s set up properly. Before you begin:

  • Use a strong, unique Google password.
  • Turn on two-factor authentication (2FA) for your Google account.
  • Never share your remote PIN with anyone.
  • Only remote into PCs you personally own or control.

Chrome Remote Desktop encrypts the connection end to end, so the security that matters most is your Google account itself — lock it down first.

Step 1 — Install Google Chrome

If Chrome isn’t already on your gaming PC, download it from google.com/chrome, install it, and sign in with your Google account.

Step 2 — Open Chrome Remote Desktop

On the gaming PC, go to remotedesktop.google.com/access.

Step 3 — Enable remote access

  1. Under Set up remote access, click Turn on.
  2. Download the Chrome Remote Desktop Host installer.
  3. Run the installer and allow permissions when prompted.
  4. Give the PC a recognizable name so you can spot it later.

Good names are short and obvious — for example CMD-Gaming-PC, MainRig, or Squad-Seeding-PC.

Step 4 — Create a secure PIN

You’ll be asked to set a PIN. This is required every time you connect, so make it hard to guess:

  • Use at least 6 digits — 8 or more is better.
  • Avoid birthdays, repeated digits, or obvious sequences.

Skip PINs like 123456 or 111111; pick something random and unique instead.

Step 5 — Install on your phone or laptop

Install Chrome Remote Desktop on the device you’ll connect from:

Sign in with the same Google account you used on your gaming PC, or your PC won’t show up.

Step 6 — Connect to your home PC

  1. Open Chrome Remote Desktop on your phone, tablet, or laptop.
  2. Your gaming PC should appear in the list of available machines.
  3. Select it.
  4. Enter your PIN.
  5. Connect.

Your home desktop should now appear on your remote device.

Step 7 — Launch Squad and help seed

Once you’re connected:

  1. Open Steam.
  2. Launch Squad.
  3. Join the Command Squad server — the server connection guide covers every way in if you need it.
  4. Spawn in, or seed AFK as needed.

Keep your PC always ready

The smoothest setup is one you never have to touch. Stop Windows from going to sleep so the PC is always reachable:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Go to System → Power & Sleep.
  3. Set Sleep to Never. Turning the screen off is fine and saves power.

Optional: better remote performance

For a more responsive connection:

  • Use wired Ethernet on the gaming PC rather than Wi-Fi.
  • Keep a decent upload speed at home (10 Mbps or better is ideal).
  • Keep Windows and your GPU drivers up to date.
  • Reboot the PC occasionally to clear things up.

Troubleshooting common issues

The PC shows as offline

Usually one of:

  • The computer went to sleep (see Keep your PC always ready).
  • Windows restarted after an update.
  • A home internet outage.
  • Chrome got signed out of your Google account.

You get a black screen

Try disconnecting and reconnecting, restarting Chrome on the host PC, or updating your GPU drivers when you’re next at the machine.

Mouse or keyboard won’t respond

Click inside the remote window to give it focus, or reconnect the session.

Why remote seeding matters

Even loading into the server while you’re working, travelling, doing chores, or watching TV helps keep it alive and populated. Consistent seeding is one of the biggest reasons Command Squad has been able to sustain growth and maintain quality games — and it’s exactly the kind of contribution that can earn seeding whitelist recognition.

One tip: test your remote setup before you actually need it. The best time to troubleshoot is not when the server is at 78 players and everyone’s waiting on seed support. A quick five minutes today saves you the scramble later.
