Galactic Contention is a free total-conversion mod that turns Squad into the Clone Wars — the Grand Army of the Republic against the Confederacy of Independent Systems, fought at Squad's scale and pace. Version 9.0, rebuilt in Unreal Engine 5, released on July 31, 2026 — and Command Squad runs a dedicated server for it, held to the same standard as the rest of our network.
This is the part that trips people up, so it's worth being blunt about: you do not have to download Galactic Contention before you can join us. Click join on our server and Squad handles it.
Open Squad and go to the server browser. Open Filter and enable Show Modded Servers — modded servers are hidden by default, and this is the single most common reason people conclude that nothing is running.
Search for Galactic Contention and pick our server.
Squad tells you the required mods are missing or out of sync. Choose Download All.
Let it finish, restart when prompted, and rejoin.
If you'd rather have it ready in advance, subscribe to the mod on the Steam Workshop (external link) and Steam will download it in the background. Either route lands you in the same place.
What makes a Galactic Contention server worth joining
A mod this size lives or dies on the server running it. The same test we apply to any Squad server applies here, and it has nothing to do with slot count:
Is it populated at the hours you play? A 98-slot server nobody seeds is a 0-slot server. Seeding is work, and someone has to do it consistently.
Are admins actually present? Not listed on a roster — in the server, during matches, acting on what they see.
Are the rules enforced the same way twice? Inconsistent enforcement is worse than lax enforcement, because you can't plan around it.
Can a new player have a good first match? A mod with unfamiliar factions, weapons and vehicles produces a lot of new players. How a server treats them on their first night decides whether it still has a population in a month.
We're not going to claim we're the best server on day one — nobody can honestly claim that about a server that launches with the mod. What we can tell you is what we're bringing to it: an established community, admins who were already doing this on our Squad servers, and rules that already work.
Squads that talk. Same expectation as the rest of the network. Squad leaders communicate with each other and with their squads.
Objective play. Clone armour and droid chassis don't change what wins a match — building, logistics, and taking the point do.
New players welcome. Everyone is new to a mod that just relaunched. Say so on comms and people will help.
The same rules. Our Squad server rules and seeding rules apply here in full — Galactic Contention runs on Squad. The factions changed; the standards didn't.
The two factions
Galactic Contention is asymmetric by design — the two sides are not mirror images with different textures on them, and that shapes how you play.
Grand Army of the Republic
Clone troopers in Phase 1 and Phase 2 armour, armed with the DC-15 weapon family.
Medics can revive downed troopers, so a coordinated squad recovers from a bad engagement far better than the raw casualty count suggests.
Armour includes the AT-TE walker and the TX-130 repulsor tank.
Confederacy of Independent Systems
B1 battle droids carrying the E-5 blaster family.
No revive mechanic — but droids don't suffer the stamina penalties clones do, which favours pressure, repositioning and mass over careful attrition.
Armour includes the AAT and SAT — heavier and slower than their Republic equivalents.
Some layers also field Geonosians — playable on the Confederacy side, and able to fly — along with Tusken Raiders and Gungans. Matches run up to 50 v 50.
Faction and vehicle details come from the mod team's own wiki (external link), which is the authority on what any given version ships. We don't develop the mod and don't speak for it.
Common questions
What is Galactic Contention?
Galactic Contention is a free total-conversion mod for Squad that moves the game into the Clone Wars — the Grand Army of the Republic against the Confederacy of Independent Systems, with clone troopers, battle droids, AT-TEs and AATs in place of Squad's modern factions. Version 9.0, rebuilt in Unreal Engine 5, released on July 31, 2026. Full details on our Galactic Contention page.
Do I need to buy anything to play Galactic Contention?
You need Squad on PC. The mod itself is free — it is a community project, not a paid expansion, and nothing on our server is behind a payment either.
Do I need to install the mod before joining your server?
No. Click join on our Galactic Contention server and Squad will tell you the mod is missing, then download it for you. Subscribing on the Steam Workshop first works too and lets you download ahead of time. Either path is covered in the how to play Galactic Contention guide.
How big is the Galactic Contention download?
Roughly 35–45 GB, on top of Squad itself. It is a total conversion, so it ships its own maps, models, audio and effects. Budget the disk space and some download time before launch night rather than during it.
Why can't I see any Galactic Contention servers in the browser?
Modded servers are hidden by default. In the server browser open Filter and enable "Show Modded Servers", then search for Galactic Contention. This is the single most common reason people think no servers are running.
Do Command Squad's normal rules apply on the Galactic Contention server?
Yes. Same Squad server rules, same seeding rules, same admin standards. The factions changed; the expectations about comms, teamwork and behaviour did not.
How many players do Galactic Contention matches support?
The mod supports up to 50 v 50. Our Galactic Contention server runs up to 98 slots, matching our main server.
Can I practise Galactic Contention offline before joining a server?
Yes. From the main menu or a training range, type adminchangelayer followed by a GC map name, then use Shift + K or the End key to open the AI menu. It's a reasonable way to learn a vehicle without holding up a live match.
Is Galactic Contention a good place to start if I've never played Squad?
It can be, but it's a harder first step than vanilla Squad — the mod assumes you already know how squads, FOBs and comms work. If you're brand new, read the new player guide first, then come across. Either way, say you're new on our server and people will help.
Seeding calls and launch nights happen in Discord
Getting a modded server populated takes people showing up at the same time. That coordination happens on our Discord — it's the fastest way to be in the first full match rather than waiting for one.
